For sale is an original welded steel sculpture signed M. This sculpture is attributed to the African American sculptor Melvin Edwards. Acquired from sale of estate collection(Stair Galleries) See Bio below. Elaine G Weitzen collected many early emerging artists in New York right at he time this sculpture was produced. If this is Melvin Edwards work it would be one year before his 1978 Survey show at the Studio Museum in Harlem NYC. The sculpture is cut and welded flat steel with a dark patina. It features two juxtaposed sharp jagged forms with a figural type element attached on the back of each. One firm being dominant over the other or perhaps the smaller firm being subservient to the larger firm. Signed and dated 1977 on the bottoms of the larger form. NOTE: ALTHOUGH THIS WORK IS SIGNED ME 1977 AND ATTRIBUTED TO MELVIN EDWARDS, WE SELL THIS ONLY AS A 1977 CUT WELDED AMERICAN SCHOOL SCULPTURE.

Larger section - 22 tall x 21 3/4 wide base. Smaller section - 10 1/4 tall x 24 long. Set together - 40 wide x 22 tall. Inspired by her mothers passion for music and art, Mrs. Weitzen began collecting art in the 1950s and soon established friendships with artists Mark Tobey, Charles Seliger , George Rickey and Arnold Newman, among others.

As founding Executive Director and a lifelong Trustee of the Board of the American Friends of the Israel Museum, Mrs. Weitzen worked closely with the museum and Isamu Noguchi (see photo at left) to create the Billy Rose Sculpture Garden, and worked with curators to build the museums collection. Weitzens own collection is a selection of works by Israeli artists Yehiel Shemi, Yaacov Wexler, and Yaacov Agam, and works by artists from the Middle East including Benni Efrat.

A devoted member of the Board of The Sculpture Center, the Collection of Elaine G. Weitzen is rich in the area of sculpture and champions the work of young sculptors and established artists alike.

Included are works by George Rickey, Jean Arp, Ronald Bladen, Menashe Kadishman, and José de Rivera. Weitzens close relationships with Charles Seliger and Mark Tobey can be seen in her holdings of their work which include many gifts and exemplify her personal commitment to the artists with whom she worked. Seeing herself as a bridge between the business of the art world and the artists themselves, Weitzen understood the challenges artists face while trying to create their art and earn a living.
